Peggy Noonan's Patriotic Grace

I have been a fan of Peggy Noonan's writing for a while and she has written a new book! She says that "this little book, written on the eve of a great election, without knowing how it will end, is intended to remind us of who we are, where we have been, where we are now, and where we are headed — together." Written in the pamphleteering tradition of Tom Paine’s “Common Sense,” Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan's new book suggests that Americans must face common challenges together — not just by rising above partisanship, but by reaffirming what it means to be American.

Meditation for the Feast of the Guardian Angels

O my good Angel, whom God, by His Divine mercy, hath appointed to be my guardian, enlighten and protect me, direct and govern me this day. Amen.

The following Meditation for the Feast of the Guardian Angels comes from Pope John XXIII and was given on October 2, 1959:

According to the teaching of the Roman catechism, we must remember how admirable was the intention of divine Providence in entrusting to the angels the mission of watching over all mankind, and over individual human beings, lest they should fall victims to the grave dangers which they encounter. In this earthly life, when children have to make their way along a path beset with obstacles and snares, their fathers take care to call upon the help of those who can look after them and come to their aid in adversity. In the same way our Father in heaven has charged his angels to come to our assistance during our earthly journey which leads us to our blessed fatherland, so that, protected by the angels' help and care, we may avoid the snares upon our path, subdue our passions and, under this angelic guidance, follow always the straight and sure road which leads to Paradise...

Everyone of us is entrusted to the care of an angel.

That is why we must have a lively and profound devotion to our own Guardian Angel, and why we should often and trustfully repeat the dear prayer we were taught in the days of our childhood.

May we never fail in this devotion to the angels! During our earthly pilgrimage we may often run the risk of having to face the natural elements in turmoil, or the wrath of men who may seek to do us harm. But our Guardian Angel is always present. Let us never forget him and always remember to pray to him.

Cardinal Bertone: Politics need God!

I am always happy to see Cardinal Bertone in the news. He is after all a fellow Salesian! While he speaks here of the financial crisis, I think this applies well to all the moral issues of the day... especially life! The following comes from the National Catholic Register:

Exclusion of God and religion from public life has contributed to a host of contemporary social problems — including the current financial crisis.

That’s the assessment delivered by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, in a Sept. 30 speech at a conference in Rome sponsored by the Aspen Institue.

Discussing the relationship of politics and religion in the age of globalization, Cardinal Bertone said, “I am convinced that politics is necessary, but I believe that, to communicate genuine values, it must respect the ‘bridge’ that unites each of these values with God.”

Without that bridge of transcendence, Cardinal Bertone said, politics loses sight of the common good and focuses instead on selfish, short-term goals.

The negative consequences of that approach can be seen in a variety of contemporary problems, including the “present financial crisis,” he said.

Said Cardinal Bertone, “Wherever one’s own benefit is sought in the short term, virtually identifying that with the good, one ends up by canceling one’s own benefit.”
