Fr. Mario Balbi, SDB, Rest in Peace

Today is a very sad day for our community and for me personally. The eldest member of my community, Fr. Mario Balbi, SDB passed away yesterday at the Port of Newark following an accident. Fr. Mario would have been 89 years old on March 25 of this year and he still went to work everyday as a chaplain at the Port of Newark. He was a great inspiration of pastoral zeal and hard work. Please pray for the repose of his soul and for our community as we mourn his passing.

It sounds like he was a great blessing to many people. I will pray for the repose of his soul, especially at Mass tomorrow.

Its been a long time since I saw him. He lived in the rectory at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, where I worked as secretary. I retired about six years ago and I don't think I have seen him since. I have, though, talked to him since on the phone. We were all family at the rectory and are very sad when a priest in residence died. There were a few deaths while I worked there. The rectory was home to several "retired" priest.
I can remember Fr. Mario coming into my office and asking me to go with him to the ports of Savannah to baptize an infant whose family traveled with the ship. The baby was a girl and I was her "Godmother", that was neat.
Father Mario you will be missed by the people in Georgia who knew you, I know that I will miss you. Rest in Peace, dear Father Mario.

Father Balbi saved me one day. About a year ago, I walked though the doors of Maris Stella Chapel and met him...he talked me down from a ledge, and helped me find my way...I took my daughter to meet him a few months ago, and he was as kind and gracious to her as he was to me...His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched and sheparded...I will miss him, and I will pray for him and the family and freinds he leaves behind...
