The following comes from the Salesian News Agency:
In October, the missionary month, a special issue was produced of the only missionary magazine of the Salesian Congregation which has kept the same title since the times of Blessed Philip Rinaldi “Gioventù Missionaria”.
The magazine with the aim of encouraging missionary groups in Salesian houses was launched in 1923 in five languages (Italian, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish), and for various reasons the only survival is an Spanish edition launched in 1926 “Juventud Misionera,” Until Vatican II the magazine contained letters from young missionaries with a strong invitation to promote the Salesian missionary vocation through the aspirantates and missionary groups in all the houses. At present 30,000 copies are printed.
“Juventud Misionera” is aimed at students in secondary schools, in the context of moral education, fostering solidarity among teenagers. Collaborating in its production at the “Casa de Misiones Salesianas” in Madrid, are the staff of the Missionary Procurement Office, Jovenes y Desarollo, VOLS – Voluntariado Solidario, Solidaridad Don Bosco and the Youth Ministry and Missionary Promotion Commissions at national level.
According to the editorial committee this issue reflects the vast commitment of the Salesians in Spain for the missions – with the various missionary NGOs which are working for development, with the witness of their volunteers, with some examples of education in development, with a brief presentation of missionary work in all five continents suggesting some practical ways in which the young people can contribute to this vast movement. In fact, after Italy, Spain is the second country with the highest number of missionaries ad gentes (300) in all the continents, and with 4 Spanish confreres taking part in the 140th Expedition this year.
